Mercedes GL450 - NAFTA Certificate of Origin
    « on: February 11, 2010, 08:52:56 PM »

    Hello all,

I got drunk and apparently bought a Mercedes on eBay last month.  I woke up with a terrible headache and looked at my email and there was this "congratulations, you won this item" email from eBay.

Just kidding.  But yes, I did buy a 2007 Mercedes GL450 on eBay!  It was sold by Mercedes Manhattan, a certified pre-owned.  I got it for US$43000, or C$44800.  50kkm and a year of new-car warranty left.

Saved over $20,000 compared to the Canadian star-certified dealer price!  Saved over $44000 compared to Canadian new.

The import steps and paperwork was pretty straightforward (thanks to tips on this site!) The only thing that had to be changed was the instrument cluster and its computer ($1100), plus a button that had English-only on it ($72).

Took about two weeks to do all the steps, and now have Quebec plates on it.

One thing I did not have when I got to Canada customs was a NAFTA certificate of origin for the car... so they charged me 6.1% duty and gave me a B2 form to file to request a refund if/when I got the NAFTA form.

This truck was made in Alabama... but I don't know if it qualifies as an American car under the NAFTA rules of origin (55% made-in-NA content minimum).

Has anyone ever obtained a NAFTA Certificate of Origin for a Mercedes R-class, ML-class, G-class or GL-class (i.e. made at the Alabama plant)?

    Thanks in advance!

    Eric

    P.S. Love the car.
