Richmond Hill, Ontario – New vehicle sales in Canada dropped 2.9 per cent in November 2009, compared with 2008, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers, giving a year-to-date drop of 12.5 per cent over the same period in 2008.

“The total market was down 2.9 per cent, although this was off a very weak November last year,” DesRosiers said. “So last month is nothing to get too comfortable with, even if it is much better than most months this year. It appears we still have a long way to go before we are out of this mess of a market.”

Predictions are that full year sales will be around 1.45 million units, a decline of about 200,000 units from 2009. DesRosiers noted that for the first time in its history, Toyota took the number-one sales spot for November, increasing 26.0 per cent from November 2008. “Toyota has had a tough year, with sales still down 12.6 per cent year-to-date, but now that they are getting product on the ground they are showing considerable improvement,” DesRosiers said. “Ford was the number-two OEM with 15,895 sales, although this was down 1.3 per cent from the same month last year, but still a very slight improvement from the overall market.”

Year-to-date, General Motors remains the number-one seller, followed closely by Ford and Toyota/Lexus, and then Chrysler.
